santa barbara

our first family vacation as the fantastic four. i had plans in my mind that it would be easy and breezy and we’d walk along the beach and eat at nice restaurants and just enjoy each other’s company on our 7th wedding anniversary in this beautiful town.  i was quickly reminded that vacations with littles just shouldnt come with plans. just as soon as we arrived to our hotel, Ru took her first series of steps. just like that, we had a walker on our hands. then as we settled down that evening i went to brush my teeth and wash my face and realized i left my whole toiletry bag at home- probably because i was more worried about making sure the kids stuff made it to the car. sweeeeet.  took a deep breath- again not in my plan.  luckily for me, my well-season-traveler-of-a-man had a spare toothbrush and a handful of other stuff that would get me by.  as usual, he saved the day.

we got to show the kids things you don’t do normally get to do in the ‘burbs: hanging out with deer, roasting marshmallows (and making “snores” as J said), feeding birds and bike rides through the woods to get hot chocolate at the little camp store. looking back, i should have known better than to have expectations or plans of any kind other than the car would be covered in goldfish and sand by the time we headed home. and that it was…and totally worth it. see all in all, had i remembered my toiletry bag, i probably would have spent a bit more time  primping and not hanging with my babes. And had Ru not started walking, i wouldnt have had the excuse to buy her Pediped fringed silver gladiator walking sandals, right? riiiiiiiight…

on a side note, we went a little different route and stayed in a camping-ish/hotel-ish place called El Capitan Canyon Resort. such a perfect place for families with young kids who aren’t quite ready for the whole tent/no modern bathroom set up. every time we headed to town, five minutes into the 20 mile trip  J would say, “can we please go back to the camping now?” he loved every single bit of it and so did we.
